Bank of England Calls for US-UK Coordination on Stablecoin Regulations
Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden has urged regulatory alignment between the US and UK on stablecoin rules, emphasizing the need to prevent regulatory arbitrage. The push comes ahead of the BoE's planned discussions on stablecoin regulation, set to begin November 10, 2025.
The US has taken a lead with its GENIUS Act framework, raising concerns that Britain could fall behind without synchronized policies. Breeden confirmed ongoing collaboration with US authorities including the Federal Reserve and Treasury departments.
Stablecoins—cryptocurrencies pegged to fiat currencies or reserve assets—are becoming an increasing focus for global regulators. Alignment with US rules may limit the UK's flexibility in regulating sterling-denominated stablecoins, but could create more cohesive global standards.
